Come Wednesday, May 1, Tom Turkey takes top spot on a hunter’s most wanted list. That is when turkey season in New York state opens and runs through May 31.
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has some reminders for hunters.
- Hunting is permitted anywhere in Washington and surrounding counties.
- Hunters must have a turkey-hunting permit in addition to a hunting license.
- Shooting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to noon each day.
- Hunters may take two bearded turkeys during the spring season.
- Hunters may not use rifles or handguns firing bullets. Hunters may hunt with a shotgun or a handgun loaded with no larger than No. 2 or smaller than No. 9 shot. Bows and crossbows are permitted.
- Hunters must fill out the tag that comes with a turkey permit and immediately attach it to any turkey harvested.
Successful hunters must report harvests within seven days of taking a bird. Report harvests online at DEC’s Game Harvest Reporting website or by calling 1-800-426-3778.
