Local Wrestlers Perform Well at Ken Baker Classic

Several local wrestlers performed well at the annual Ken Baker Classic at Hoosick Falls High School on Saturday.

Whitehall’s CJ Monty earned the crown in the 190-pound weight class. Monty won an 8-3 decision over Granville’s AJ Landon in a rematch from just a few days ago when the Railroaders and Golden Horde met in a league meet.

Granville’s Nathan Barber was the runner-up at 138 pounds, falling to Averill Park’s Jaimie Bartlett 8-2.

Jaxon Torres placed second at 152, dropping a decision to Gabe English of Berne-Knox Westerlo-Middleburgh.

Luke LeBlanc of Salem-Cambridge won the title at 108 pounds with a 5-0 decision over Owen Greene of Ravena-Coeymans Selkirk. Teammate Jonah Stevens was third at 101 pounds.

Trey Lee of Fair Haven finished second at 131 pounds. Henry Dill of Salem-Cambridge was fourth.

Gabe Bache of Fair Haven finished fourth at 160.

Anthony Szabo was fourth at 124 for the Slaters.

Flying Forts Upset Horde

On Saturday, Fort Edward threw a wrench into the Adirondack League boys basketball race, upsetting Granville 48-46 on the Golden Horde’s home court.

The loss was only the second of the season for Granville in league play, dropping them two games behind North Warren and into a second-place tie with Corinth.

The Flying Forts led 14-10 after a quarter and 29-25 at the half.

Fort Edward increased the margin 34-25 at one point in the third, but Granville used their fullcourt press to reel off a 5-0 run to pull within 34-30.

The Flying Forts led 47-43 with under a minute remaining. RJ Monger hit a 3-pointer for the Golden Horde, but Fort Edward held on for the road win.

Cal Boucher had a double-double for Fort Edward with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

Zach Bartholmew netted 19 points to lead the Flying Forts in scoring.

Liam Farrell led Granville with 22 points. Monger contributed nine and Will Jennings six.

Fort Edward improves to 3-6, 6-8. Granville is now 7-2, 9-4.

Granville Girls Defeat MSJ

The Granville girls basketball team won their second game in less than 24 hours as they traveled across the Vermont border to defeat MSJ of Rutland 45-23 in a non-league contest on Saturday.

Sophomore post-player Ella Olsen was once again the focal point of the Golden Horde offense. Olsen recorded her second straight double-double with 16 points and 14 boards.

Megan Decker added nine points and 11 boards. Melissa Beaver played a strong overall game with 11 assists and seven steals.

Granville is now 7-6 on the season.

Cougars Edged by Moriah

North Warren battled hard against Section VII powerhouse Moriah, but the Vikings edged the Cougars 61-60 in a game played at Word of Life in Pottersville.

Semaj Cuyler poured in 29 points to pace North Warren. Derrick Tyrell added 16.

Logan Gilbo led the Vikings with 15 points. Joe Pelkey chipped in 14.

The loss dropped North Warren to 11-3 overall.
