John S. Riley


Pittsford: John S. Riley, 68, of Pittsford, NY, President of Metrix Marketing in Rochester and proud husband, dad, and dog-owner, passed away at Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua early on Monday, December 4, 2023, after an acute illness.


A former Democrat and Chronicle reporter, John was known for his independence, determination, and feisty spirit. He loved political and communications strategy and never hesitated to take on an issue, identify a wrong, or fight for a worthy cause. After leaving the Democrat and Chronicle in 1993, he became Communications Director for Monroe County, where he served until starting Metrix in 2002. From 2002 to 2023, he built Metrix Marketing into a successful business, providing marketing advice and services to local government and private clients.


Originally from Whitehall, NY, John was a graduate of RIT in Rochester and launched his career in journalism at the Watertown Daily Times in Watertown, NY. He also worked at The Repository in Canton, Ohio before joining the Democrat and Chronicle in 1986.


A gourmet chef, John loved cooking for his family and friends, especially baking bread and putting together elaborate feasts on holidays. He was a history buff, a student of World War II.  He also loved baseball, classical music, woodworking and even found time to write a novel.

 
He is predeceased by his parents, M. Louise and Bernard J. Riley of Whitehall, NY. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Driscoll; his sons, Patrick Riley of Chicago, IL and his wife, Annelies O’Dea, Sean Riley of Louisville, KY and his fiancée, Paige Ezell; his pets, Cooper and Raffy; his brother, Jim of Ontario, NY; his sisters, Kathy of Jacksonville, FLA, Irene of Zebulon, NC, Elaine of Mt. Hermon, LA and their spouses; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.


His family would especially like to thank the staff and physicians at the Intensive Care Unit at Thompson Hospital, who provided amazing care and support during his illness. Interment was private.
