Blue Devils Send Capman Out With a Win in Chili Bowl

It has been a rough couple of years for Poultney football. However, things seem to be turning around at just the right time. Last week the Blue Devils snapped a 17-game losing streak. Saturday Poultney sent legendary Hall of Fame coach Dave Capman out on a high note with an impressive 39-0 win over Missisquoi at Dean Houghton Field in the annual Chili Bowl game.

Capman is not completely retired yet. The Blue Devils still have a few games to play. But this was the last scheduled regular season home game for Poultney. And his tea handed Capman the greatest gift possible.

Erik Kendall paced the Blue Devils with 117 yards on 11 carries. Jack Dickerson added 107 yards on eight carries. Lucas Welch contributed 72 yards on 11 carries.

Tegan Capman, Coach Capman’s grandson touched TD passes to Peyton Book and Jack Anderson.

Dickerson did everything but sell popcorn for the Blue Devils. He ran for three touchdowns, kicked two field goals, and kicked several extra points.

Kendall rounded out the scoring with a 15-yard scoring run.

After the game, Capman was presented with a rocking chair at midfield.

Poultney improved to 2-3. Missisquoi. Is 0-5.

Cambridge-Salem Defeats Blackbirds

Cambridge-Salem got off to a slow start to the season, but on Saturday they picked up their second win of the season, defeating Voorheesville on the road 30-14 in Section II Class D football.

Brice Burr led all rushers with 120 yards on 19 rushes for Cambridge-Salem. Brayton Cary rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Cary hit the end zone from seven and two yards out.

Isaiah Lohret added a 5-yard rushing touchdown, and Stephen Yakubec hit Baxter Mattson with a 19-yard scoring pass.

Joe Kelly completed 9 of 18 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns for the Blackbirds. Kelly tossed touchdown passes of 77 yards to Ethan Pooler and 59 yards to Eric Richardson.

Salem is now 2-2, 2-3. Voorheesville is 0-4, 0-4.

Fair Haven Stays Unbeaten in Division II Showdown

Fair Haven stayed unbeaten on the season, holding off Bellows Falls 27-20 in a Vermont Division II football showdown.

The score was tied in the fourth quarter when Joe Buxton connected with Trey Lee on a 21-yard touchdown pass for the eventual game-winner.

Konner Savage clinched the win for the Slaters with an interception at the goal line in the final seconds.

Buxton also tossed a 14-yard strike to Lee and a screen pass TD to Phil Bean.

Billy Lussier scored on a 3-yard run.

Buxton finished with 183 yards passing and ran for 41 yards.

Lee caught four passes for 74 yards. Lussier ran for 59 yards.

Fair Haven is now 5-0 on the season.

Riverhawks Blank Hadley-Luzerne in Cup Game

Corinth stayed perfect in Adirondack League play as they blanked Hadley-Luzerne 3-0 in the annual boys soccer Cup Game.

Tyler Smolinski scored two goals to fuel the Riverhawks to victory.
Logan West added a goal and an assist for Corinth. Hunter Shanahan added an assist.

Owen Baker made 11 stops in goal for the Riverhawks.

Matt Harder and Nolan Moore combined for 21 saves for the Eagles.

Poultney Falls to MSJ in Chili Bowl Game

MSJ exploded for four second half goals to defeat Poultney 4-1 in the annual Chili Bowl girls soccer game.

The game was tied 1-1 early in the second half, but MSJ ripped off three consecutive goals to pull away.

Emma Blodorn recorded a hat trick for the Mounties.

Riley Collins also scored for MSJ.

Eme Silverman scored the only Poultney goal.

MSJ is 6-3. Poultney is 4-4-1.
