75 years ago, July 22, 1948

New York State’s famed Black Horse troop has its first patrol boat on Lake Champlain. The Vigilant, a 38-foot twin-screw cabin cruiser, arrived at Plattsburgh late Monday afternoon from trial runs on the St. Lawrence River.

Police Chief Edgar C. Whalen estimated that more than 3,000 people representing Whitehall and area villages and cities witnessed the pyrotechnic display Friday night, climaxing the two-day program commemorating Our Lady of Mount Carmel, staged by the Mount Carmel society.

The organization meeting of Whitehall’s board of education took place Tuesday evening at Whitehall High School. Members present included John C. Hoffman, Maurice Murphy, Albert St. Claire, Frank H. Kingsley and newly elected Harold Chilson, Arthur R. Hoffman and Dr. Reginald J. Carroll. Page E. Cole, superintendent of schools, and Miss Nina E. Taft, board clerk, were also present.

Barge canal cargoes during the week ending July 17 totaled 138,106 tons, according to an announcement at the State Department of Public Works.

North Whitehall: Mr. and Mrs. George Ward called on Mr. and Mrs. J.P. King in Benson and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Adams in Fair Haven on Sunday.

Putnam: Miss Jacquelyn Charlton and Terry Charlton are spending two weeks in New London, Connecticut, visiting at the home of their sister, Mrs. Marion E. Merfeld and family.

Clemons: Vernon Holcomb and family spent Friday evening in Whitehall.

Huletts: The Rev. and Mrs. Henry Condit called on Ella Foster Friday afternoon. Rev. Condit recently celebrated his 50th anniversary as pastor of the Episcopal church.

At the Capitol: Tonight and Friday, “I Walk Alone”; Saturday, “Casanova” and “The Challenge”; Sunday and Monday, “Green Grass of Wyoming”; Tuesday and Wednesday, “Woman in White” and “Jassy”.

Births: a son, Rolland Michael, to Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Meers; a daughter, Ann Marie, to Mr. and Mrs. Glen Wood, Whitehall village; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Chester W. Fredette, Whitehall; a daughter, Sharon Ann, to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Seymour, Albany.

Weddings: Dorothy Manell and William F. Gordon, both of Whitehall village.

50 years ago, July 26, 1973

The Doctor Procurement Committee this week announced that it has achieved its goal and is closing its books. The committee was established several years ago to bring a doctor to this village and its aim was realized when the Whitehall Medical Services was established at 140 Broadway. The local office is in charge of Drs. Jay Edison, Barry Kellogg and Joseph Foote. The doctors have revealed that during their first year here they have treated 6,000 patients at their office and made 364 house calls. In addition, 800 of their patients were admitted to area hospitals.

Henry F. Gurney, a past 4th district commander, was elected to the office of department vice commander at the state convention of the American Legion held in Binghamton July 18-21. Commander Gurney’s jurisdiction will comprise the 18 counties in the 3rd and 4th districts. Mr. Gurney is a member of Whitehall post, 83, American Legion.

Whitehall Grange, 922, and Whitehall Junior Grange, 345, will hold their only meetings this month on Friday evening, July 27, at 5:15 o’clock. A report of the annual chicken barbecue will be made. Edson Ayers was the winner of the penny guess at the barbecue. There were 1,219 pennies in the jar and Mr. Ayers came up with the closest guess, 1,210.

Births: a son, Patrick Michael, to Mr. and Mrs. James Murphy, Baltimore, Maryland.

25 years ago, July 23, 1998

The Lake Champlain South Bay Boat Launch will receive $335,000 to make improvements to the parking area and restrooms, and to convert the abandoned highway bridge deck into a handicapped accessible fishing pier. Gene Terry of the Whitehall Fish and Game Club was very excited about the local South Bay project, saying that it is something that the club has been pushing for 10 years. Basic conceptual ideas and designs are being drawn up to convert the abandoned bridge deck into a fishing pier. Construction on that part of the project is expected to begin by next spring.

Former Whitehall school board president Gillette Nash was nominated and unanimously elected once again to the position of president at the organization meeting Monday, July 13. Andre Gordon was elected vice president. Nash was board president four years ago and has been a member of the board since 1982.

The Washington County Board of Supervisors expressed its opposition to a law which, if put into effect, would provide a “damage for delay” clause in all municipal contracts between the county and a private contractor. The bill is presently pending in the Legislature. The board approved the 1998-99 ACC budget; the county’s share of the $15.3 million budget will be $814,342.

Valley View Golf Course, the former Willow Pond Golf Club and owned by Ron Slusarczyk, will hold its grand opening in late August.
