First responders arrive on scene to assist a 17-year-old boy after being struck by a 79-year-old woman's moving vehicle on Rawson Avenue on Oct. 18.

A Granville High School student was sent to the Rutland Regional Medical Center after being struck by a motor vehicle on Rawson Avenue where the bus loop at Granville Junior/Senior High School begins.

The 17-year-old boy was conscious and alert and was placed in a cervical collar on a stretcher as a precaution.

The Granville Rescue Squad ambulance that transported the 17-year-old boy to Rutland Regional Medical Center.

“The two officers that were on scene told me that the youth said he ran across the road, didn’t see the vehicle, ran in front of the vehicle and got struck,” Police Chief Ernie Bassett Jr. said. “I would list that as an accident for the driver. The individual is obviously at fault if he runs across the road without checking and was not in a crosswalk. He did not have the right-of-way to cross the road there.”

The driver, a 79-year-old Granville woman, was not ticketed. Bassett said the driver, victim and witness from Massachusetts all had the same story of the incident’s events.

Granville police officer Jason Vandenburgh said the vehicle was not operating at a high speed and that he and another Granville police officer were awaiting a family member of the boy to arrive when NYVT Media arrived on scene.

“They’re checking him over now, he’s awake and talking to them. He seems okay,” Vandenburgh said.
