A broken insulator caused a power outage throughout the village of Granville that lasted more than two hours Monday afternoon.

Clay Ellis, manager of corporate communications at NYSEG, said a crew was working in the Granville substation when an insulator broke. That caused a transformer bank to be interrupted, and the interruption was on two circuits.

Almost 1200 customers were affected by the outage, which lasted for about 2 hours and 25 minutes from 11:10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

NYSEG had to bring a line crew in to assist the substation crew in order to restore power.

“There must have been a problem with the insulator that broke,” Ellis said, explaining that such a piece of equipment is exposed to the elements all the time and is therefore subject to relevant problems.

“It’s not common, but it’s something that does happen,” he said.

Throughout the village, most homes and businesses did not have power, save those with generators such as the schools and the Price Chopper Plaza.

Dan Williams, superintendent of public works, said his crew did not have much extra work other than monitoring generators at the wastewater treatment plant and water plant and compressors at two sewer pump stations.

Most of those affected by the outage were residents of the village, although a small number of town residents lost power as well.
