Richard R. Matteson, age 52, died at Glens Falls Hospital on June 3, 2009.

Richard was born on Jan. 13, 1957, in Granville, the son of Raymond and Florence (Martelle) Matteson.

Dick attended Granville High School. He was employed at K.D. Stone. Dick was an avid gardener, both vegetables and flowers. The bounty of his harvest could be enjoyed by family and friends since he was an avid cook. Bread was one of Dick’s fortes and the family thought he made the “best bread in the world.” Dick loved coffee and drank it by the gallon. Another of Dick’s enjoyments was working on his truck. Dick loved being with people, joking and playing jokes on friends, but he also knew the value of time alone and was comfortable in his own company.

In addition to his mother, Florence Monroe, Dick was also predeceased by two brothers, Christopher and Kenneth Matteson; and a nephew, Kenneth L. Matteson.

Survivors are his father, his children, Jason Matteson and his fiancée, Heidi Johnson, both of Granville, Jeremy Matteson of West Rupert, Vt., Andrew Matteson of Whitehall, Sarah Matteson of Granville, Tonya Matteson of Granville, Adriana Matteson of Whitehall; his stepchildren: Pamela Lacelle and her husband, Brett, of Richland, Valerie Daigle of Concord, Va., Matthew, Ryan, Rebecca and Krysten Cyr, all of Whitehall. In addition he is survived by his brothers, Raymond Matteson Jr. of Maine, Gregory Matteson of North Granville; and two sisters, Rose Marie Monroe of Truthville and Barbara Varney of Middle Granville . Also surviving Dick are his former wives and mothers of his children, Valerie Rathbun of Granville and Stephanie Matteson of Whitehall, along with his current companion, Jennifer Litchfield, and her children Kyle and Quintessa of Hebron. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces and nine grandchildren.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, June 9, at 1 p.m. at Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Pawlet, Vt. In keeping with his wishes Dick will be cremated and there were no calling hours.
