Hughes returns to sidelines after kidney transplant operation for former player
It was actually quite surprising.
Neil Hughes knew he was doing something good as he headed toward the doors of the operating room at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Sept. 15, but he may not have realized how much support he had from the Whitehall community.
“It has been just amazing,” said Hughes, who returned to the sidelines for the Railroaders’ 30-12 win over the Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons Knights on Sept. 18, three days after he donated one of his kidneys to Whitehall graduate and former football team member Clinton Brown.
For 24 minutes, the Whitehall Railroaders had upset on their minds.
The varsity football team battled to a 7-0 halftime deficit against the Cambridge Indians on Sept. 11, using a pressuring defense and two turnovers to stay within one touchdown heading into the second half.
The Railroaders looked to have the Indians held to a three-and-out to open the third quarter, as Cambridge faced a third-and-eight with freshman quarterback Billy Pine scrambling against the Whitehall pressure.
Whitehall coach donates kidney to former player
Usually, a coach helps his player by teaching him proper tackling technique, positioning and play-calling.
Then, there are coaches that will give a kidney for their players – literally.
On Sept. 15, Whitehall varsity defensive coordinator Neil Hughes entered the hospital along with Clinton Brown, a former member of the Railroaders who was in need of a kidney transplant.
