Good Morning! With the Border Country Sports Report, I’m Keith Harrington.

I’m back! After taking the month of August off after the TCML season ended, I have been waiting and ready for some high school sports to cover. Vermont high school football and soccer kicked off yesterday and I am eager and ready to go. Here’s a look at some of last night’s action.

Fair Haven Girls Roll Past Canes

The Fair Haven girls soccer team opened a season they hope will end with a state title in impressive fashion as they rolled over Hartford 7-1 Friday night at LaPlaca Field. The Slaters blew open a competitive game with five unanswered second-half goals.

Fair Haven led 2-1 at the half on goals from Maddy Perry and eighth-grader Leigha Kretzer.

Perry and Kretzer hit the back of the net twice in the second half to finish with hat tricks for Fair Haven. Abby Young also scored for the Slaters.

It wasn’t all perfect for Fair Haven as Elizabeth Love went down with an injury early in the contest.

Harper Traendly scored for the Hurricanes.

Kate Hadwen recorded four saves for the 1-0 Slaters.

Poultney Falls to Long Trail in OT

The Poultney and Long Trail girls soccer teams played to a scoreless draw in regulation time, but the Mountain Lions scored in the extra session to grab a 1-0 victory in the season opener for both teams.

Long Trail converted a penalty kick in overtime to claim the victory.

A standout for the Blue Devils was freshman goalie Julia Handley who held the Mountain Lions scoreless during regulation in her varsity debut.

Long Trail is 1-0. Poultney is 0-1.

Blue Devils Blanked By Wasps

The Andrew Breting era as the Poultney football coach opened with a tough assignment Friday night as Woodstock blanked the Blue Devils on the road 48-0.

It was a rough start for Poultney as the Wasps led 14-0 in the first minute of the contest.

Woodstock extended their lead to 28-0 at the break and cruised the rest of the way.

After a bye, Poultney will seek their first win when they host Missisquoi in two weeks.
