LAKE GEORGE – A man who was attending college in Pennsylvania drowned Aug. 27 while visiting Lake George with a group of friends.

Rupak R. Padini, 25, a citizen of India, was among a group of people who reported to be in distress near Lamb Shanty Bay, which is located just south of Gulf Bay. The location is technically in the Warren County Town of Hague, but the shorelines of both bays are in the Washington County Town of Putnam.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office said it had been called to the scene at about 3:20 pm. Tuesday in response to a report of a possible drowning. Deputies located a group of people whom they described as in distress near the shore in the area of Lamb Shanty Bay.

The group was near a pontoon boat, but no watercraft were directly involved in the incident, deputies said.

Lamb Shanty Bay is largely inaccessible by land.

Law enforcement personnel were able to rescue the distressed people but quicky determined that one member of the group -later identified as Padini – was not accounted for.

Marine units arrived at the scene and recovered the missing group member from the water. First responders attempted life-saving measures but the man was subsequently pronounced dead, deputies said.

The investigation into the incident remained open Wednesday afternoon.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Lake George Park Commission, North Queensbury Volunteer Fire Company, Hague Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, Bolton Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, and LifeNet of New York.
