Granville Police beat

Aug. 9

1:30 p.m. A village resident reported what he described as a hazardous condition on Main Street. Officers contacted a person affiliated with the building about a piece of glass that appeared to be hanging over the sidewalk that appeared unsafe. The person said he would either remove or secure the glass.

Aug. 11

7:30 p.m. Police received a request for a welfare check on a child at a Park Street residence. The caller, the child’s mother, was hard to understand and was slurring her words, police said. Officers contacted a person living at the address, who told them the woman was an alcoholic and that he had brought his daughter to his family home in an effort to get her mother to receive treatment. This child appeared happy and was playing in the yard with her cousins. NO further police action required.

10:35 p.m. Officers were dispatched to a North Street residence in response to a 9-1-1 rapid SOS call. The dispatcher said the caller was not forthcoming with information. Police arrived and spoke to the caller, who said he was fine and did not need assistance.

Aug. 13

11:45 a.m. A village Department of Public Works employee contacted police after he found a gold ring while digging in the vicinity of the Lions Club on Lions Lane. Officers placed the ring into evidence. If the owner does not come forward to claim the ring within a set period of time, it will be turned over to the finder.

12:20 p.m. Police responded to a fire alarm at the New York State Electric & Gas hydro generation facility on North Street. When officers arrived, they observed a heavy smoke condition and tried unsuccessfully to contact employees. After contacting firefighters, police found an unlocked side door and entered the facility, where they found a working fire. Officers were unable to determine what was burning because of the smoke. An employee then arrived and told them that based on the location of the fire, he believed a lithium battery pack was burning. Responding officers attacked the fire with an extinguisher taken from a nearby wall and thought they had put the fire out. However, it reignited soon afterward. The Whitehall Volunteer Fire Co. arrived and were able to put the fire out. Fire damage was confined to an interior bay wall; no injuries were reported.

Aug. 14

7:35 a.m. A Granville resident contacted police about a missing juvenile who was being sought by New York State Police. The person said a juvenile male at her residence was in contact with the missing girl and believed she was near a Main Street business. Village police contacted troopers at the scene, who told them the girl had been located.

8:57 a.m. An individual stopped into the police station to reporting hitting a cat with his vehicle on South Quaker Street near the village line. The cat was killed; the body was left in the roadway. Officers contacted the village Public Works Department to pick up the animal.

12:20 p.m. The owner of a Mettowee Street property told police his neighbor had told him a male youth wearing a white T-shirt and carrying a black backpack had been walking around his yard. The property owner said he searched for the youth with no results. Officers also searched the area without finding the youth. The property owner said nothing appeared to be missing.

Rutland County Sheriff’s Office

Aug. 13 – 10:42 p.m. – A deputy observed a vehicle failing to maintain its lane on VT Route 30 in Poultney and conducted a traffic stop. The operator, 29-year-old Morgan Gates of Mt. Holly, allegedly showed several signs of impairment. According to the incident report, Bates failed a field sobriety test and then resisted arrest. She was taken into custody a short time later.

Bates was processed on charges of DUI and resisting arrest as well as civil violations of failing to maintain a lane and no insurance. She was released to a sober adult with a citation to appear in Vermont Superior court at a later date.

Vermont State Police

Aug. 14

7:37 p.m. – Troopers from the Vermont State Police-Shaftsbury Barracks responded to Sunderland Hill Rd in the Town of Sunderland for a motor vehicle complaint involving two vehicles. Investigation revealed that one vehicle was attempting to pass the other when they collided, causing minor damage. Troopers identified one operator as Jason D. Sanders (45) of Dorset.

While speaking with Sanders, Troopers observed indicators of alleged impairment. Sanders was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI. Sanders was transported to the Shaftsbury Barracks for processing and released on a citation to appear at Vermont Superior Court in Bennington at a later date and time.

Pawlet Constable

Aug. 13

11:40 a.m. – The Pawlet Constable stopped 27-year-old Lucas P. McBride of Dorset on VT Route 30 for driving without an inspection. Upon interview, the constable determined that McBride’s driver’s license was under criminal suspension. McBride was arrested and issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court at a later date.
