Now that the Section II softball champions have been crowned the sectional Most Valuable Players and All-Stars from each league have been named. A Granville softball player also earned a significant honor.
Salem pitcher Sophia Keays was named the Section II MVP from the Adirondack League. Keays led the Generals to the Adirondack League and sectional Class D titles.
Granville senior Lauren Bascom and sophomore Ella Olsen were named Section II Adirondack League All-Stars, as was Lake George sophomore Mollie Johnson.
Junior Madison Sawyer of Hudson Falls was named an all-star from the Foothills Council.
Granville senior Haylie Barber had received the Aileen Durrant Award. The award is presented annually by the Capital District Softball Umpires Association to only three softball players in central New York who show exceptional sportsmanship as well as athletic prowess.
In 1991, the Capital District Umpires Assn. established the Aileen Durrant Award to
recognize Durrant’s contributions to the sport of high school softball. Each year, the group
recognizes one senior softball athlete from each of the three assigning zones (Northern,
Capital & Southern).
Umpires and coaches are asked to submit the names of one or more players who
fit the criteria. The awards are presented on the day of sectional finals.
The recipients must be in their senior season. They must combine excellent softball play
with good sportsmanship. Leadership and academic accomplishments are also
considered.
