The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Inc. (NYSPHSAA) announced its winter 2024 Scholar-Athlete teams.
This is the 32nd year NYSPHSAA has conducted the Scholar-Athlete program, which is sponsored by Pupil Benefits Plan, Inc. Several Adirondack League teams and other local squads are on the list.
NYSPHSAA recognized 3,225 Scholar-Athlete teams this winter. To qualify as a team, 75% of a team’s average GPA for the season must be equal to or greater than 90%. Additionally, 38,032 students received individual scholar-athlete recognition by earning an individual average of 90 or above this winter season, whether their team qualified or not.
“Congratulations to the over 38,000 student athletes who earned Scholar-Athlete recognition this winter,” said NYSPHSAA Executive Director Dr. Robert Zayas. “It takes a strong effort and work ethic from a student-athlete to build a solid academic base and simultaneously a competitive spirit in their sport, and NYSPHSAA is proud to recognize those efforts.”
This winter, 621 schools participated in the program — over 80% of the NYSPHSAA membership.
Granville was well represented with seven teams on the list. The Golden Horde boys’ basketball, bowling, boys’ wrestling, girls’ basketball, girls’ wrestling, and indoor boys’ and girls’ track and field were recognized for their academic prowess.
