Cougars Roll to Another Class D Crown
Typically one of the issues for high school basketball teams who advance to Cool Insuring Arena is shooting the rock. Teams find it difficult to find their range with the depth perception of the vast arena. I guess no one told the North Warren Cougars.
North Warren came out on fire from behind the arc with a record-setting performance and went on to roll to their second straight Section II Class D crown, rolling over Loudonville Christian 73-55.
The Cougars raced out to a 32-18 first-quarter lead, with 30 of their points coming from behind the 3-point line. North Warren connected on a sectional record 10 treys in the opening stanza. Coleman Swartz was responsible for four of the 3-pointers.
North Warren increased their advantage to 47-28 at the half. Loudonville Christian pulled within 58-49 early in the fourth but the Cougars widened the advantage with foul shooting down the stretch.
Wyatt Jennings led North Warren with 20 points. Swartz and Semaj Cuyler contributed 15 each and Derrick Tyrell 14.
Tyrell pulled down 14 rebounds to record a double-double.
Michael Marshall led the Eagles with 30 points.
Tyrell was named the tournament MVP. Cuyler was named to the all-tournament team.
North Warren fell to Loudonville Christian 71-61 in their season opener at the Spa Catholic Tournament.
The Cougars are now 19-4 and will be looking for another trip to the Cool Insuring Arena for the state semifinals when they take on Section VII champion Schroon Lake next Saturday at Clinton Community College at 6:30 p.m.
Loudonville Christian finishes 15-6.
Witches Fall to Duanesburg in Class C Final
The top-seeded Greenwich girls basketball team saw their season come to an end as they fell to No. 2 Duanesburg 47-33 in the Section II Class C championship game at Hudson Valley Community College.
Brooke Kuzmich led the Witches with 18 points. Adrianna Rojas chipped in eight points for Greenwich.
Hannah Mulhern had a double-double for the Eagles with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Allison O’Hanlon added 10 points for Duanesburg.
O’Hanlon was named the tournament MVP. Mulhern was named to the all-tournament team along with Kuzmich and Rojas.
Greenwich ends the season 22-1.
