The Rutland County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of a single-car rollover crash with an unresponsive occupant in the area of 96 East St. in Proctor.
Upon investigation it was determined that the vehicle driven by 46-year-old Benjiman Curtis of Proctor failed to negotiate a turn and left the roadway. Curtis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Curtis was chair of the Proctor Select Board and a history teacher at Proctor Jr./Sr. High School.
An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of Curtis’s dearth as a medical event may have occurred at the time of the crash.
The high school will have grief counselors available for students and staff when school returns from winter break.
East Street was closed for several hours while the clean-up and investigation took place.
Deputies say this is an active investigation and ask anyone who might have any information about the crash to contact Corporal Gregory Rickets at 802-775-8002.
