Golden Horde Rally Past Spa Catholic

The Granville girl’s basketball team closed the season on a high note, rallying to edge Saratoga Catholic 43-36 in a non-league matchup Tuesday evening.

Golden Horde coach Dan Brown installed a box and one defense and utilized it to keep the Saint’s high-scoring Sophia Ryan in check.

“We used a box and one defense. We used four different players on Ryan. She scored 27 points on us earlier this season,” Brown said.

Ryan was held to just three points this time around.

Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first quarter with the Saints leading just 6-2. Granville outscored Spa Catholic 13-11 in the second to pull within 17-15 at the break.

The Golden Horde used a 28-19 advantage in the second half to take control.

Paige Taylor led the Granville with 14 points. Megan Decker added nine and Lauren Bascom eight.

Ella Olsen pulled down 16 rebounds and blocked five shots. Melissa Beaver dished out eight assists and collected seven steals.

Rylee Cornell netted 11 points for the Saints. Addison Whitbeck chipped in nine.

Granville raised their mark to 9-10 on the season. Spa Catholic falls to 7-13.

Hartford Earns Win Over Bishop Gibbons

In a potential preview of the Section II Class D final, Hartford turned the tables on Bishop Gibbons with a 50-48 win Tuesday night at the Ella Colvin Gym. The Golden Knights defeated the Tanagers in the season’s opening game in a rematch of last season’s sectional title game.

The two teams could again be on a collision course. Both Hartford and Bishop Gibbons are expected to be among the highest seeds and top contenders to wear the crown when sectional tournament pairings are announced today.

Cailin Severance nailed a clutch 3-pointer to give the Tanagers the lead with just under 30 seconds to play and made a pair of free throws to ice the game.

A 3-pointer at the buzzer was too little too late for Bishop Gibbons.

McKenzie Johnson led Hartford with 18 points. Severance added 13.

Alawnah Dunda recorded a double-double for the Tanagers with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Angelina Dietz led the Golden Knights with 16 points. Alanah Kelly chipped in 13.

Hartford is now 14-6. Bishop Gibbons is 12-7.
