Whitehall-Charles Arthur Bascue-It is with profound sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother. After a valiant fight with Alzheimer’s Disease, Charles A. Bascue peacefully passed away on January 28, 2024, at the Fort Hudson Health Care Facility in Fort Edward, NY.
Charlie (Coach) was born on April 25, 1946, in Glens Falls, NY to the late Charles and Nancy Bascue of Whitehall NY.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Keith Bascue and Jeffrey Bascue, niece Brittan Bardol and many other loved family members.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Martha, who he married in 1972, his children; Lauren Steves (Christopher) of Whitehall, Whitney Burger (Matthew) of South Glens Falls and Charles Bascue (Laura) of West Sand Lake, Grandchildren: Dominic, Lola, Tate, Grady, Luca, and Mila., Sisters, Nancy Shannon Huntington (James) of Dresden, Valerie Lisa DeLuca (Mark) and sister in law Sharon Bascue of Whitehall along with several nieces and nephews.
He was a 1964 graduate of Whitehall Jr-Sr High School, earned his BS in education from SUNY Oswego and went on to obtain his master’s degree in Elementary Education from The College of St Joseph in Rutland Vermont. During the years of attending college, he also served in the Navy during the Vietnam era and was stationed in Reykjavik Iceland and San Diego CA. Charlie was an Elementary teacher for Whitehall from 1975-1977 and then was offered the Recreation Director position for the Town of Whitehall in 1977 and served the youth of Whitehall until his retirement in 2005. Charlie coached Tennis, Basketball, Baseball and Football from 1974 to 2018.
On June 17, 2021, Charlie was inducted into the Whitehall Central School Athletic Hall of Fame, for his “Exceptional Coaching Achievements and Contributions as Recreation Director to the Youth of the Whitehall Community and Athletes of Whitehall Central School”; an honor he cherished. He was a passionate coach who encouraged the youth of Whitehall to strive for excellence in athletics and life. On September 30, 2023, The Whitehall Recreation Booster Club dedicated the brand-new Basketball and Pickle Ball courts in Charlie’s name. The “playground” was a place that Charlie always fostered, an environment where friendships were developed, skills were learned, memories were made but more importantly a safe place for children to come to. Throughout his life he made a positive and lasting impression on hundreds of kids.
Our family would like to give our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful Caregivers at Fort Hudson Health Care System. Charlie received the most loving care anyone could ever ask for. They are like family to us. Very special thanks go to Colette, Brittany, Tammy, Dawn, Vicky, Kevin, Shannon, Donna, Sarah and James. Thank you to his Hospice team, Jen Wade and Pat Jones. You all made his journey more bearable and comforting.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Whitehall Recreation Booster Club to continue Charlie’s legacy – Donations can be sent to PO Box 205, Whitehall, NY 12887
