Whitehall – Nelson Robert Smith, 74, passed away following a long illness on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Glens Falls Hospital.
He was born on November 28, 1948, in Whitehall, the son of Donald A. Smith and Della (Martindale) Smith.
He was a graduate of Whitehall High School, “Class of 1966”. After graduating, he enlisted into the United States Navy. Growing up, Nelson was a member of the Whitehall United Methodist Church.
Nelson and his wife, Susan (Irons) Smith were united in marriage on April 10, 1972, and had celebrated their 51st anniversary this year.
Nelson was employed for the D & H Railroad, retiring from the C.P. Rail System after many years of service.
He was an avid outdoor sportsman, especially hunting and fishing and always had a large vegetable garden each year. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and supported them by attending many of their many sporting events.
He is predeceased by his two brothers, John Smith, and Donald Smith.
Survivors include his wife Susan Smith of Whitehall, his son Matthew (Colette) Smith of Hudson Falls, his daughter, Melissa Smith of Whitehall, his four grandchildren, Areigh, Chloe, Shane, and Kelsey Smith. He is also survived by his three sisters, Diane Scoles of North Carolina, Linda Rockenstire of Hudson Falls, Lori Smith of Colonie and several nieces and nephews.
Nelson requested that there be no calling hours or funeral services.
