Vermont State and Castleton Police are asking the community to remain vigilant following the discovery of a woman’s body on the D&H Rail Trail late Thursday afternoon, Oct. 5.
Police first responded to the call about 4:30 p.m. and discovered that a woman had died under suspicious circumstances.
A shelter-in-place advisory was issued at Vermont State University in Castleton in which they indicated the victim had been stabbed. Officially, police will only say the investigation is in its preliminary stage and cannot comment any further at this point.

Troopers are asking businesses and homeowners in the Castleton area to review their surveillance systems for a white male, about 5’10” tall with short dark hair, last seen wearing a dark gray T-shirt and carrying a black backpack.

Troopers say this individual should be considered armed and dangerous. They ask the public to remain vigilant and alert for suspicious person(s) or activities and to report anything they might see to the Vermont State Police.
The body of the deceased woman will be brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy and cause of death.
The troopers and Castleton Police are being assisted in this investigation by the VSP Major Crime Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigations, field force division.
Law enforcement has said they will keep the public up to date on the status of their search.
