In her tenure as head field hockey coach at Granvville Katie Barber and her staff have built a plug and play system. When key players graduate there is always someone waiting in the wings to fill the role and the Golden Horde machine keeps on clicking. This season doesn’t seem to be any different.

Granville received a strong effort from senior Haylie Barber and several others contributed as the Golden Horde opened their 2023 campaign with a 7-0 victory at Gloversville.

Barber’s team led 3-0 at the half and tacked on four goals in the third period to put away the Huskies.

Haylie Barber began the scoring at the at the 11:19 mark of the first period with an assist from Claire Gould. Barber extended the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal just over three minutes later.

Mackenzie Martell made it 3-0 Golden Horde on an assist from Barber with 3:49 remaining in the period.

After a scorless second period Granville put the contest out of reach in the third. Lillian Baker scored off a helper from Barber, then returned the favor, setting up Barber for her third goal of the day.

Melissa Beaver gave the Golden Horde a 6-0 lead off an assist from Ella Olsen. Baker closed the scoring by converting a Makenna McKnight pass.

Granville finished with 34 shots and 13 penalty corners.

Megan Decker and Amirracle Newton combined on the shutout for the Golden Horde. Evelyn Cio kicked away 24 shots for Gloversville.

“I’m super proud of how the team is coming together. It’s a mix of veteran seniors with some very strong young players. They are a very hardworking group,” Barber said.

Granville is 1-0. Gloversville is 0-1.
