Stefanik, Tonko look to expand national heritage area

North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is reaching across the aisle to join another Capital Region Congressman, Paul Tonko, to introduce legislation to enhance the Hudson River Valley Heritage Area to include all of Washington and Saratoga counties. The measure would expand opportunities for both counties to participate in federal grant programs, increase tourism and expand economic development in Washington and Saratoga counties.

Stefanik noted in her press release “Upstate New York and the North Country are home to a rich history, and I am proud to continue to preserve and promote it through this legislation.” Tonko added “I have long pushed to strengthen and preserve our heritage areas and I was thrilled to make a major breakthrough in that push with the passage of my National Heritage Area Act into law this year.”

This action would bring the federal boundaries of the area in line with the state boundary and would provide cultural and economic development opportunities in both New York’s 20th and 21st Congressional Districts.
