
Walter (Brother) James Newell, 82, a resident of North Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Whitehall, New York, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022, in North Fort Myers. He was born July 19, 1940, in Whitehall, New York, to Walter and Grace Newell Sr., now deceased.
After serving in the United States Army, he returned to Whitehall to open Frere and Company Marine Hardware and Supply, which he alternated with winters in Fort Myers, Florida, first at Olsen’s Marine and later at Owl Creek Boatworks. He retired in 2020. He loved helping others, and always accepted people without criticism, making each one comfortable in his presence. A quiet man of honor and integrity, he kept his word, did his duty and loved his wife.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Betty Newell of North Fort Myers, as well as four sisters, Laura Morris of Seattle, Washington, Ann Koegler, also of Seattle, Gill Nash of Whitehall and Kibbie and Phil Rolf of Sunrise Beach, Missouri.
