Officers were called to Lower Bellamy Street on Oct. 5 for a domestic dispute that involved a deer in the residence.
Dispatch advised that the 37-year-old woman who called was upset because her boyfriend told her he was going to shoot and kill their pet deer. The officer said the 28-year-old man told him he was not going to shoot the deer or harm it in any way.
The man said the argument with his girlfriend started because he had been deer hunting and had the car too long and came home late. And yes, he said, he did have a pet deer in his upstairs bathroom.
The officer spoke with the woman who said she got upset because she needed to use their car for important matters and was not able to. She said she did yell at the man and with tensions raised the man said he was going to just kill the deer they have.
The woman said nothing physical occurred during the dispute; she simply wanted to pack her things and leave for the night. The officer spoke with the man again and told him his girlfriend was going to leave for the night. He agreed that was best.
After handling the domestic dispute, the officer turned his attention to the deer, which the man said he picked up on State Route 149 between Hartford and Granville in May after its mother was killed by a passing motorist.
The man said he feeds the deer, which he calls “John Deer,” grain and blueberries and has kept it in good health. The officer contacted Environmental Conservation Officer Man Krug and advised him of the situation. Krug stated he would be unavailable to handle it at the time but would take care of it the following day.
