Whitehall girls defeat Queensbury, 6-1

By Keith Harrington

The Whitehall softball team went unbeaten during the regular season last year before falling to Lake George 7-0 in the Adirondack League championship game. The Warriors then eliminated the Railroaders from the Section II Class C playoffs by an identical 7-0 margin in the semifinals.

Whitehall returned to action last Friday with expectations running high, and the optimism was well-founded as the Railroaders blanked Queensbury of the Foothills Council, 6-1.

Whitehall returns most of its team from a year ago and should once again be serious contenders in both league and sectional play. With Foothills Council powers Schuylerville and Glens Falls also listed on their non-league schedule it appears as though the Railroaders have upgraded their level of competition in preparation for the postseason.

The Railroaders did all their damage on offense in two innings. Whitehall plated a run in the first and made that lead stick until they blew the game open with five more runs in the sixth.

Madison Gould took care of the rest in the circle, holding Queensbury to just four hits while striking out 10 to earn the win.

Olivia Whiting and Ava Ruby had big days at the plate. Whiting was 3 for 4 with a double. Ruby also was 3 for 4. Vinna Jensen homered and knocked in three runs.

Alexis Rogers struck out 11 for the Spartans.

Rogers and Cassidy Ray were both 2 for 3 at the plate for Queensbury.

Whitehall is 1-0. Queensbury is 0-1.
