Losses hurt Horde’s tourney chances

By Keith Harrington

While speaking with Granville boys basketball coach Justin Nassivera after a loss to Fair Haven on Saturday, assistant coach Chris Fuller announced the potential retirement of quarterback Tom Brady.

“Can I get Sawyer Ramey to retire?” Nassivera quipped with a hearty laugh.

Ramey, a junior guard for the Slaters who is widely regarded as one of the best players in Vermont, dismantled the usually stifling Golden Horde defense and Fair Haven’s post players dominated the paint as they rolled past Granville, 73-51, at the Granville gym in the renewal of what has become a competitive cross-border rivalry. It was the third loss in a row for the Golden Horde.

“Sawyer’s a heck of a player,” Nassivera said. “By far he would be the best player in the Adirondack League. He’s just such a tough guy to guard.”

In front of the largest crowd of the season, Ramey dazzled the spectators with his slick ball-handling, outside shooting and eye-popping passes. Ramey netted 31 points to pace the Slaters.

The game was tight early and after a slow start the Golden Horde took an 8-7 lead. They would not savor the lead again. Fair Haven led 17-14 after a quarter and used an 18-11 second quarter to extend their advantage to 35-25 at halftime.

Any chance of a Granville comeback went by the wayside in the third quarter. The Slaters outscored the Golden Horde 24-10 in the stanza to lead 59-35 heading to the fourth.

Fair Haven led by as much as 30 in the final frame before the Golden Horde put together a minor rally.

“They’re such a good basketball team,” Nassivera said. “We had such a battle last night with Lake George. We played a solid half of basketball, then I think we got tired.”

Phil Bean added 13 and Joe Buxton 11 for Fair Haven.

Nathan Rathbun had 13 points for Granville. Cody Nelson chipped in 12.

Fair Haven is now 8-0. Granville is 9-6.

The night before at Lake George, the Warriors avenged an earlier loss to Granville, winning 48-40 in Adirondack League action.

Lake George jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the first quarter and 24-20 at the half.

Granville put things together in the third quarter, using a 17-13 advantage to draw even at 37-37 heading to the fourth.

The final stanza belonged to the Warriors as Lake George closed the game with an 11-3 stretch to claim the key league victory.

“We tied the game up and then went ice cold in the fourth quarter,” Nassivera said. “We didn’t score until Cody Nelson hit a pull-up three with a minute and a half to go. By then we were down nine or 10 and in hurry-up mode.”

Cameron Orr led Lake George with 18 points and three assists. Julius Moffit added 15 points and contributed four rebounds and three assists. Ryan Becker grabbed 10 boards and just missed a double-double with nine points.

Caleb Nelson had 21 points for the Golden Horde. Cody Nelson added nine. Connor Farrell collected 10 rebounds. Rathbun added six boards.

Lake George is 11-1, 13-3. Granville fell to 6-4, 9-6.

On Tuesday night Granville traveled to Warrensburg and was defeated by the Burghers 57-51 in Adirondack League play.

Steve Schloss was a major headache for Granville, pouring in 35 points and hauling down eight rebounds for the Burghers.

Granville came out strong, leading 17-13 after a quarter and 29-21 at halftime.

Schloss imposed his will in the second half and Warrensburg outscored Granville 18-11 in both the third and fourth quarters to take control. Schloss scored 15 of his team’s 18 points in the final stanza.

Evan LaPell added 10 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Warrensburg.

Caleb Nelson had 20 points for Granville. Cody Nelson added 16.

After the difficult week the Golden Horde is all but eliminated from getting into the league championship tournament.

“We’re on the outside looking in, we need an awful lot of help,” Nassivera said. “The problem is Argyle, North Warren and Warrensburg all hold head-to-head over us. We’ll just try to get ready for post-season play at this point.”

Warrensburg moved to 4-3, 6-3 with the win. Granville dropped to 6-3, 9-4.

Horde girls top Lake George, 38-34

By Keith Harrington

The Granville girls basketball returned to the win column Friday night as they defeated Lake George for the second time, this time on the road, 38-34, to sweep the season series. It was the second win for the Golden Horde since Ben Hover assumed the head coaching job.

“I liked the way our girls stayed composed,” Hover said. “Anytime you go to Lake George you know they are going to have a large crowd and make some noise.”

Granville led 9-8 after a quarter and the Warriors tied the game 18-18 at the half.

The Golden Horde outscored the Warriors 9-7 in the third to take a 27-26 lead and took an 11-9 fourth-quarter advantage to secure the victory.

Granville raised its mark to 4-7, 4-11. Lake George is 1-9, 2-10.

On Saturday Granville made the trek to Hoosick Falls for a rematch with the Panthers and returned home with a 58-29 loss against the Wasaren League foe.

“They were a very good shooting team and we just couldn’t catch up with their three point shots,” Hover said

Hoosick Falls led 15-6 after a quarter behind the outside shooting of MacKenna Roberson and Amber MacNeil.

A 13-4 second quarter increased the Panthers’ lead to 28-10.

Granville played a solid third quarter, outscoring Hoosick Falls 14-13, but the deficit was too much to make up. The Panthers closed the contest with a 17-7 fourth quarter.

“We rebounded well, but turnovers killed us again,” Hover said.

Roberson led Hoosick Falls with 15 points. MacNeil added 14. Ava Case and Marley McLellan chipped in 11 apiece.

Lilly Strout paced Granville with 12 points. Williams added 11.

Hoosick Falls improved to 6-5. Granville dropped to 4-12.
