The Hartford-Fort Edward softball team is a young squad in a rebuilding process under second year coach Russell Wade and the Flying Tanagers are still searching for their first win of the season as they try to make up for lost time after not having a season last spring.

Friday was Senior Night for Hartford-Fort Edward players Emma Wade, Mattie Viele, Alexis Sesselman, Hannah Lawrence and Moriah Normandin. Pulling off a win on their special day would be a challenge against unbeaten Salem, which was coming off a win over a powerful Lake George team.

The Generals took control early and went on to cruise to a 16-0 win in Adirondack League play.

Salem took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but it was the third inning that proved to be decisive. The Generals scored five runs in the inning to increase their lead to 7-0, which proved to be more than pitcher Sarah McCauliffe needed.

McCauliffe silenced the Hartford-Fort Edward bats, firing a no-hitter with six strikeouts.

McCauliffe was also a factor on offense as she went 3 for 3 with a double. Taylor Cary was 4 for 4 with a triple for the Generals. Amber Terry was 2 for 4 with a double. Tory Cary added a triple and Mackenzie Keys doubled.

Salem connected for 12 hits in the game and took advantage of four Hartford-Fort Edward fielding errors.

Salem is 4-0, 4-0. Hartford-Fort Edward dropped to 0-5, 0-5.

On Monday, Hartford-Fort Edward faced rival Argyle. The Flying Tanagers again struggled early and couldn’t recover as the Scots posted a 17-5 Adirondack League win.

The Scots raced out to an 8-0 lead after two innings. Hartford-Fort Edward plated four runs in the third to cut the lead in half at 8-4.

Argyle responded with a quartet of runs in the third to push the margin back to 12-4 and scored five runs over the next two innings to finish off the victory.

Gretta Schneider picked up the win in the circle for the Scots with five strikeouts.

Schneider helped herself her own cause by going 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs. Bryanne Mattison was 3 for 4 and drove in a run for Argyle. Anna Aubrey and Lillirose Prevost were both 2 for 2.

Wade was 3 for 4 for Hartford-Fort Edward. Ava Nadeau was 2 for 3 with a double. Abby Newell and Natalie Durkee were both 2 for 2.

Argyle moved to 1-2, 1-2 with the win. Hartford-Fort Edward was 0-3.
