Pember Board of Trustees Chair Mary King.

Pember Board of Trustees chair Mary King was more than excited to announce her determination and desire to reconnect a relationship with the Granville Central School District.

“Before, the relationship that we created with them was we will provide programs here, or the school, on whatever topics you want. Obviously with the museum she (library director Ardyce Bresett) can do a lot of science-based stuff,” King said. “We worked with kids with English projects, history projects and library skills.”

Now, with the advancement of technology, King and the board are willing to contribute however they can and develop an increased appreciation for libraries in tight-knit communities like Granville.

“It worked before but life was different then,” King said. “What I want to do is whatever they want me to do! Basically, we want to do the same thing, it’s just going to look a lot different because there’s much more technology. And, we want to show children that right now, a kindle, I don’t know if you know this, but did you know that you can borrow Ebooks through the library for free on your kindle? Kids and adults need to know this.”

Additionally, King and board member Jerry McKinney are trying to embrace the Christmas spirit by reading stories for children.

“I thought especially with Christmas, I want to just try this from the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas, Jerry and I are going to come in and do a film session here just reading books in front of the fireplace or Christmas tree, and we’re going to read children’s books for Christmas and then have Ardyce (Bresett) upload them all on to whatever, Facebook, so kids can pick the book, and click on it and have a Christmas story from the Pember,” King said.

Board member Maria Hyatt recommended that the Pember put together a goody bag of sorts that has a craft for children to do on their holiday break from school.

King wants the community, both New Yorkers and Vermonters, to become involved and serve with the Pember in its standing committees, Finance, Building and Grounds, Policies and Personnel, Library, Museum and Events and Public Relations.

“(We’re) asking for community people to join the committees, so as long as there is a board member running the committee, community people can be involved,” King said. “We aren’t on an island… people do come across that border and there was a time that there was as many Vermont people involved here as there were New York people here, and they’re restricted to board seats, they can’t have board seats, but they can certainly (help).”

The next Pember Board of Trustees meeting will take place on Thursday Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Pember Library
