Granville spirit night

Bolstering school spirit is the aim of an event that will be held tomorrow night at Granville High School.

The school will host a Spirit Night from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, at the school.

“We’re trying to bolster school spirit and build that school-community connection,” Principal Camille Harrelson said.

While the district holds a pep rally in the fall, Friday’s event will look to showcase all of the school’s students and not just its athletes.

“We wanted to give all the students a chance to show where they shine,” Harrelson said.

The event will showcase the school’s music and art programs as well as its many clubs and student activities.

Students have held a number of events leading up to Spirit Night, including t-shirt and poster design contests and a poetry slam. And throughout this week, students and staff have dressed up. For instance there was a day when students had to dress up and teachers dress down. Friday will be “blue and gold day” when students are encouraged to dress in school colors.

“We’re trying to build camaraderie,” Harrelson said.

The event is the brainchild of Michelle Bromley, a social studies teacher in the high school.
Bromley said the high school she attended outside of Philadelphia holds a similar event that is hugely popular.

Harrelson credited Bromley and Cory Burton, an English teacher, with spearheading Friday’s event.

“They’ve really taken change and have done a great job,” Harrelson said.

The theme of inaugural event is Time Warp and a number of activities are planned.

There will be quiz bowl on the history of Granville, art work, tug of war, “chariot races” and dizzy bat, to name a few. Students and staff will participate in the events.

The public is encouraged to attend Friday’s event.

“It’s going to be an outstanding job,” Harrelson said. “We’re looking forward to this becoming an event that is held in Granville for many years to come.”
