For all they achieved on the field, three of Whitehall’s winter sports team achieved even more in the classroom.
Three teams—girls basketball, girls indoor track and boys indoor track—earned distinction as scholar athlete teams.
The girls basketball team had the highest cumulative grade point average of any Whitehall sports team with a 95.95. Although that figure includes only the seven highest GPAs on the tam, all 12 players had at least a 90 average.
The members of the team were: Taryn Tracy, Rachel Lavin, Kelsey Farley, Ashley Davis, Sam Baldwin, Caitlyn Sandford, Amber Eggleston, Brooke Paddock, Mallory Keough, Malia DeLorme, Connor McKee and Shelby Keane.
The girls indoor track team had a cumulative GPA of 95. Members include: Abby Dickinson, Francis McKinney, Meghan Redmond, Olivia Short, Morgan Winters and Haley Wiskoski.
The boys indoor track team managed a cumulative GPA of 92.89.
Members of the team were: Josh Desautels, Zach Eaton, Cullen Flynn, Steven Foster, David Greenough, Sean Hart, Logan LaChapelle, Seth Peets, Tyler Sweenor and Alex Wood.
At the end of each sports season, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association honors teams across the state that excel not on the pitch, but in the classroom.
In order to qualify as a scholar-athlete team, the team’s cumulative GPA must be at least 90 percent. The number of athletes that constitute a team varies sport to sport. To qualify in basketball, a team need only include the GPA of its top seven members. That threshold increases to 12 in track. Small teams that include less than the required number of players, such as Whitehall’s girls indoor track, can still qualify so long as the entire roster is used to determine the team’s overall average.
