Thanksgiving meal a community affair

Thanksgiving-2013-004A local organization is offering the entire community a chance to come together, give thanks and enjoy a home-cooked meal.

The Companions in Christ Fellowship Committee will serve its 10th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner tomorrow from noon to 2 p.m. at the Whitehall United Methodist Church, located at Greenmount Cemetery Lane.

The event puts the community back in community dinner.

“This event is totally funded by donations from the community,” organizer Maxine Willis said.

The entire meal is bought using donations generously given by local businesses and individuals.

Much of the prep work is done in the days leading up to the event. Members of Willis’ family and parishioners at the Whitehall United Methodist Church spend hours leading up to Thanksgiving preparing the meal.

Volunteers help with every facet of the dinner, from cooking to setup to serving.

The event is open to the community and organizers encourage anyone who doesn’t have a place to eat, or don’t have the means to cook their own meal, to attend.

The meal is free and deliveries can be arranged for people who can’t be in attendance. Requests for takeouts must be ordered by phone by 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Reservations are not required.
