A benefit basket party for a local student who will be traveling as a People to People student ambassador will be held later this month at PK Hill in Comstock.

The event will benefit Sadie Sheldrick, a fifth grade student at Whitehall Elementary School who will travel to the Canadian west as a People to People student ambassador this summer.

The basket party will be held on Saturday, April 13, at PK Hill on Route 22 in Comstock. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and drawings will begin at 1 p.m.

The basket party is being organized by family and friends to help Sheldrick pay for her trip.

Organizers are looking for donations of basket items, gift certificates that could be raffled off and monetary donations. Anyone who would like to make a donation can drop off items at Putorti’s Market.

Sheldrick will join a delegation of students this summer on a 12-day educational program that will travel through the providence of British Columbia making stops in Vancouver, Vicotria, Kelowna, as well as Banff and Calgary in Alberta.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded People to People, which has become one of the world’s most recognizable education travel programs.

In order to become an ambassador students need to receive a nomination, be interviewed and attend training sessions. They also have to find a way to pay for the trip.

Sheldrick has been collecting bottles and cans, recycling cell phones, and reaching out to local businesses. The basket party will be a continuation of those efforts.

Admission to the basket party is $5 and includes a sheet of tickets; additional tickets will be available for $2. There will be raffles, lunch and refreshments available.
