The Town of Hampton is exploring ways it can save money on its energy costs.
The board approved a motion to purchase two programmable thermostats for the newly constructed town hall and is exploring the possibility of purchasing an exterior wood furnace that would be used to heat the town highway garage.
“It’s just an idea to think about, to see if it’s feasible,” Supervisor Dave O’Brien said.
He said Granville uses an outdoor boiler to heat its highway garage and officials have indicated it’s been a huge cost savings for the town.
One issue that will need to be explored is whether the town can find a good source of wood.
Officials plan to explore the cost of the furnaces and if it’s an idea they determine is feasible, the town would consider purchasing the heater during summer when prices are lower.
In other matters, the board unanimously approved agreements with the Fair Haven and Hampton Fire Departments to provide fire protection in the community.
The agreement with Hampton will cost the town $27,813, an increase of $2,500 from last year.
The department will provide service throughout fire district one, which encompasses most of the rural community.
Fair Haven’s agreement is for $4,541, a reduction of $52 from last year. The department, which responded to five calls in Low Hampton during the past year, will provide service in fire district 2.
Both agreements need to be signed by the respective fire departments before they are finalized.
The Hampton Fire Department will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, to discuss the purchase a new fire truck. The meeting will be at the firehouse and the public is invited to attend.
O’Brien also said the Washington County Sheriff’s Department will share a small office with town personnel at the town hall.
The agreement will allow the department to provide an additional police presence in Hampton. The sheriff’s department will have its own phone line installed. The arrangement will on a trial basis for six months and then each side will assess its effectiveness.
