Boys basketball losses pair on road

The Whitehall boys basketball team was on the wrong end of a pair of lopsided games prior to Christmas break.

The Railroaders were outscored by a total of 71 points in losses to Hartford and North Warren last week.

On Dec. 18, the Railroaders were done in by a lackluster second quarter on the road against Adirondack League rival Hartford.

Whitehall scored only 12 points in the first half as Hartford raced out to a 19 point lead in route to a 59-35 victory.

Tad Jones scored 30 points for the Tanagers and Delos Jackson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Carl Rehm scored 16 points for Whitehall, hitting four shots from beyond the arc.

The game was close after the first quarter as Whitehall trailed by only a point, but the Railroaders scored 13 points over the next two quarters while Hartford exploded for 38 points to put the game out of reach.

Things got even worse on Friday night as North Warren handed Whitehall its fourth loss of the season in an 84-37 drubbing.

The Cougars had five players scored in double digits, led by Nick Sapienza’s 18 points and Ethan Schenke’s 15.

Justin Hoagland scored a game high 18 points and Josh Hoagland scored nine.

Much like their game against Hartford, the Railroaders were thoroughly outperformed by North Warren in the second and third quarters.

In those quarters, North Warren, which has emerged as an early season contender in the Adirondack League, outscored Whitehall 57-17.

The Railroaders who are 1-4 on the season will play in the second round of tonight’s holiday tournament at Whitehall High School.

The tournament, which features four teams, begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday’s results weren’t available in time for publication. If the Railroaders won on Wednesday they will play at 7:30 p.m. If they lost, they will play at 6 p.m.
