Grapplers finish 4-3 at duals

Whitehall’s wrestling team had a successful weekend, going 4-3 at the Columbia Duals.

The Railroaders defeated Lansingburgh 39-20 on Friday night and bested Columbia’s “B-team” 63-24, Tamarac 49-39, and Shaker’s “B-team” 76-6, on Saturday.

“I thought we wrestled well,” said head coach Bob Diekel. “We beat the teams I’d thought we beat.”

John Diekel finished the weekend 7-0, Ryan Love and Austin Rich each went 6-1, Brandon Steves, Chad Amerio and Jake Gregory wrestled to 5-2 records, and Julian Barber, Al Aubin and Dominic Gregory each recorded four wins apiece.

Amerio, wrestling at 120 pounds, recorded five pins on Saturday.

“I though Chad wrestled great,” Bob Diekel said.

John Diekel recorded four pins on Saturday and Jake Gregory, Steves and Barber each recorded three pins on the second day of the tournament.

Rich and Love each recorded two pins, one decision and two forfeits on Saturday.

Aubin, who normally wrestles at 126 pounds, competed at 132 pounds in four of his seven matches, winning three by pin.

The tournament featured a total of eight schools and Whitehall was by far the smallest with several “A” and “B” schools competing.

“We wrestled against some big teams but it makes us better at the end of the year,” said head coach Bob Diekel.

The Railroaders will compete in the Amsterdam Duals before hosting South Glens Falls next Tuesday and Corinth next Thursday.
