An early-morning car crash last Thursday claimed the life of a young Queensbury man.

Michael P. Sharkey, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:40 a.m. accident on State Route 22 in Dresden.

New York state police said Sharkey was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt when he went off the east side of the road, down an embankment and struck a rock ledge. No one else was in the car.

Sharkey was southbound at the time of the accident but police did not know from or to where he was heading.

Police believe excessive speed could have been a factor in the crash. There was no indication he was under the influence of alcohol at the time, but toxicology tests will be performed.

Sharkey was a graduate of Ticonderoga High School.

State police were assisted at the scene by members of the Dresden and Whitehall fire departments, Skenesborough EMS and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.
