Softball finishes at 12-4 with wins

The Whitehall girl’s softball team wrapped a successful season with a pair of convincing victories.

The Railroaders defeated Hadley-Luzerne 9-2 last Wednesday and followed up that performance with a 12-1 victory over North Warren on Friday afternoon.

With the wins, Whitehall improved to 12-4 on the season and finished tied for second place with Fort Ann in the Adirondack League East division. Argyle finished first in the division. Lake George, who won the West division, defeated the Scots 5-4 in the Adirondack League Championship game on Friday.

The Railroaders move onto the Section II tournament for the third consecutive season, where they received a ninth seed in the Class C playoffs and were scheduled to play Waterford last night (results weren’t available at press time).

Waterford was 14-2 during the regular season.

 

Upcoming games

The opening-round winner will advance to play the winner of the game between Mechanicville and whoever advances from the Galway-Berlin game tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. Mechanicville is the top-seeded team in the bracket and finished the season with an 18-2 record and were ranked the second-best Class C team in the state.

On Wednesday, Whitehall did all its damage in the first three innings as it defeated Hadley-Luzerne.

Brittney Putorti limited Hadley-Luzerne to eight hits in seven innings and Jackie Raino had two singles and drove in a run for Whitehall.

After allowing a run in top of the first inning, Whitehall scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and Putorti held Hadley-Luzerne to a single run the rest of the way as she picked up her 11th win.

Whitehall scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings and added a ninth run in the sixth inning.

On Friday, Putorti and the Whitehall defense shut North Warren down, limiting them to a single run on four hits. She finished with nine strikeouts.

Ariel Ayers went 3 for 4 and scored a pair of runs for Whitehall and Olivia Short stroked a double.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings until Whitehall broke open the game with seven runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. They added two more runs in the seventh inning and didn’t surrender a run until the final inning.
