Bascue strikes gold again

 

Whitehall’s Codie Bascue continues to rack up the medals as he prepares for the first-ever Youth Olympic Games that will be held inIgls,Austriain less than two months.

The youth team captured a total of seven medals in Youth Game qualification races held in Calagary Nov. 17-19 as Bascue and teammate Jake Peterson fromPrinceton,Minnesotacombined to win both of the teams gold medals.

The pair shared pilot duties, with each guiding the sled to a gold medal in dominating fashion.

Bascue led by 1.36 seconds in the first race with a total time of 1:58.86 for the team’s first gold medal of the competition. In the second race, Peterson drove to a two-run total of 1:56.60 to dominate the second competition by 2.18 seconds.

As they did earlier in the season at a race inPark City,Utah, the duo easily defeated the South Korean team of Jun Won Choi and Min Seo Choi.

Afterwards, Bascue discussed his excitement with officials from the US Bobsled and Skeleton Federation. 

“It feels great to finish all of the qualification races,” Bascue said.  “I can’t wait to go to the Youth Olympic Games with Jake.  It feels awesome knowing that I came here expecting to win every qualification race I was in, and I met those expectations.  I haven’t met all of my goals yet, because my next big goal is to win gold in Igls with Jake.”

The Youth Winter Games will be held Jan 13-22.

The US Youth Games teams will officially be announced on Dec. 11 but Bascue and Peterson are almost assured of being on the team, considering they have yet to lose a qualifying race and have done so in dominating fashion.

The team won both a pair of gold medals in two races held Nov. 9 and 10 inPark City,Utah.

Bascue also piloted a two man sled with Jeremy Ware fromNashville,Tenn.to a sixth place finish in an America’s Cup race held in Calgary Nov. 17-20.
