Whitehall youth team winds up second

The Whitehall fifth and sixth grade football team traveled to Corinth on Saturday night to take on Warrensburg in the Northern Adirondack Youth football league Super Bowl, and despite a great effort, came away on the short end of a 39-26 score.

Whitehall put a scare into the Burgers from the start, taking the opening drive 60 yards and capping it off with a Jacob Stoodley touchdown run for a 6-0 lead. Warrensburg came right back with a big play and tied the score. Still in the first quarter, Whitehall drove down the field again on their second drive, using the old Whitehall goal line offense and ripping off 5 and 6 yards at a time to get in the end zone again when Stoodley scored his second of the game. Shane Amerio threw a conversion pass to Thomas Fish for a 14-6 lead. From there Warrensburg started to take over. Whitehall was victimized by the big play again as Warrensburg scored to make it 14-13. Prior to the half, the Burgers were able to up their lead to 31-14. All of the Warrensburg touchdowns were on big plays, with Whitehall missing tackles and being outrun by the bigger, stronger, faster Burgers.

The second half Whitehall was able to make their first stop of the game on defense and took over for their first drive. The Railroaders again methodically drove down the field and reached paydirt when Jacob Moore scored from five yards out to make it 31-20. On the next drive, Whitehall’s defense held again and got the ball back. With momentum in their favor, the Railroaders started one of their patented drives and were moving the ball down field, frustrating Warrensburg. But the momentum changed quickly when Whitehall fumbled the ball and the defense recovered. From that point on, Warrensburg had all the momentum and were able to control the remainder of the game. Whitehall was able to stop the Burgers one more time until they scored to take a 39-20 lead. IN the final minute, Jacob Moore scored again to make the final score 39-26.

The game was the first Super Bowl game played in league history. Earlier in the season, Warrensburg beat the Railroaders 36-6. The loss ends the season for the railroaders, which saw dramatic improvement throughout the season.
