Shoppers expected to throng to town-wide yard sale

In a little over a week,Whitehall’s streets and by-ways will be transformed into a bustling market place as the Town-Wide Yard Sale returns on Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 3 though Sept. 5.

The event is organized by the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce and typically features several dozen sales throughout the community.

Carol Matheny, the event’s organizer, said they host the event each year on Labor Day Weekend to take advantage of the hordes of people passing through town on the last official weekend of summer and to promoteWhitehall’s various businesses.

“You have so many people that are coming through the area that weekend,” Matheny said. “It’s a great chance for us to show whatWhitehallhas to offer.”

Besides a few new vendors, the event remains essentially unchanged. Most streets in town will be lined with sales where people will be able to locate that hard to find collectible, second hand appliance or children’s toys.

Matheny said there will be some outside vendors who set up shop along Route 4 where they will display and sell their wares.

However, as is the case most years, a majority of the sales will be concentrated in the area ofWilliams Street.

“Most times you can’t even walk downWilliams Street,” Matheny said. “It can get that busy.”

In order to help people find all those sales, the Chamber is once again sponsoring a map that will indicated the location of sales in town.

There is no charge to be included on the map and anyone with any interest in having their sale included is encouraged to contact the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce by Saturday, Aug. 27.

Maps will be available to lawn sale patrons at Putorti’s Market,SkenesboroughGardens, Stewart’s and Cumberland Farms.

Along with sales, there will also be a couple of places where hungry shoppers can stop and get a snack or lunch. Most deli counters in town will be ready for the extra visitors and there will be several food vendors.

Augmenting this year’s sale is the “It’s All About Jesus Fest” which will be held Saturday in the Canal Side Park adjacent the Visitor’s Center and will feature a half dozen bands.

The Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company will also host their annual coin drop.
