Janice Labas passed away on March 26, 2011, after a long illness. Born Janice Marie Flower in 1928, she was a life-long resident of Granville, NY. She graduated from Granville Central High School, and went to earn her degree in Dental Hygiene from Eastman Dental School in Rochester, NY. She worked as a dental hygienist for Washington County and in the office of Dr. Barrett on North Street before marrying and starting a family. Together with her husband, Michael Labas, Sr., she raised 7 children, and build an honorable reputation in their hometown.
Janice’s home was always a place of refuge and security. She welcomed guests for dinner, conversation, and when the need arose, for lodging. Neighbors relied on her to take care of their children, to supply common sense, first aid, and advice. Everyone knew they could stop by at any time for a cup of coffee and a sympathetic ear. Her children never hesitated to bring friends home.
Like her mother, Janice used her talents as a seamstress in several areas. Her kitchen served as her workshop for alterations and created Easter outfits, prom gowns, and countless costumes for dance recitals. Later, her fabric shop, Hoj Poj, attracted people from miles around.
Janice was proud of her Welsh heritage and fostered a love of education, music and performing in each of her children. She thought nothing of driving several hundred miles to bring her children to schools, auditions, rehearsals, or performances. One of her greatest gifts was discovering and encouraging potential in others, and one of her greatest joys was being an audience as her children put their potential to use.
Janice was predeceased by her husband, Michael Labas, Sr and her daughter-in-law, Nancy Klotermeier Labas. Survivors are her seven children: Cynthia Baldino, Michael Labas, Mary Cosey, Bernadette Maloney, John Labas, Stephen Labas, and Paul Labas, by her maternal cousin Dick Griffith and by her paternal cousins Bob Flower, John Flower and Marion Romeo. Her grandchildren are Tom, Joe, and Ben Cosey, Nicola, Mike, John and Mary Labas, Patrick and Emily Maloney, and Anthony Baldino. her great grandchildren are Brayden and Leah Cosey, Jonathan and Gabriel Labas, Catherine Rose Williams and Lucas Hurley.
