When members of the Granville girls basketball team take to the court this season, if they look back at all, it will be for inspiration.

Although the team won just four league contests and six overall last season, one of those was down the stretch against a good Hudson Falls team in a very close game leading to a home sectional win against Cobleskill.

Fourth-year head coach Lance Jordan said the squad wants to improve on that record despite the key loss of graduate Chelsea Lyons, a four-year starter who drew a lot of attention on the floor from opposing defenses. “It’s a lot different this year than it was last year,” Jordan said.

What the team brings to the court this year is experience and depth, Jordan said. “We’re returning four starters this year,” he said.

With one of the Wasaren League’s top scorers in junior Emily Fuller along with senior Meghan O’Brien, junior Hunter Bassett and senior Alyssa Scott, Jordan said he hopes to build upon last year’s success thanks to the collective years of playing time the team has.

Jordan said despite the graduation losses, the Wasaren is always tough and teams having an off year for any reason will have a tough time.

“The league lost a lot of seniors last year. We were a young team; now we’re still a bit young, but have lots of experience,” he said.

Many of the members of the team played summer league ball, something any successful program takes advantage of to sharpen skills and practice.

“Hopefully, we’ll capitalize,” Jordan said. “We’d like to get over that hump of four (league wins) and move on towards eight.”

Jordan said he’s looking to have an up tempo game offensively because of the team he has with faster players like Fuller and O’Brien.

“We’re looking to push the ball and then go … so we’re looking to get the ball in their hands,” Jordan said.

“Setting up plays and really pounding the ball, we don’t have any really big girls so we can’t really do that. We’re looking to do a lot of fast break and hitting the open three type stuff,” he said. “And then lock it down on defense.”

As a nearly 6-foot freshman with lots of raw talent, Heather Chapman is one player Jordan said he hopes draws attention as much as Lyons did. Jordan said he hopes to see teams having to plan for Chapman’s presence.

“We’ve got a couple of these girls coming back next season so it’s really exciting,” he said.
