While one train has left the station, another will soon be arriving to help out those in need during this holiday season.
As the CP Rail Holiday Train helped out the Whitehall Ecumenical Community Food Pantry, the D&H Railroad/Marine Corps Toys for Tots Train will arrive in Whitehall on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 11:15 a.m. to help bring cheer to those whose financial circumstances may be less than ideal.
“The program aims to provide at least one toy for needy children,” said Jim Lafayette, local program coordinator through the Whitehall American Legion. “The toys provided by the Marines are supplemented by local donations, and they will deliver the toys to Whitehall on a special train set to arrive here at 11:15 a.m. on Dec. 5.”
Lafayette added that they are still looking for donations.
“Donations are way down this year,” said Lafayette. “There is a collection box at the Dollar General Store and at the American Legion Post. Your help is needed. You still have time.”
The Toys for Tots program is intended for needy children ages newborn to 12.
“The intent of the program is for needy children, but all are welcome to take part in the arrival of the train,” said Lafayette. “Santa and his helpers will make for a fun occasion along with distribution of gifts and a chance to meet Santa.”
Upon departure of the Toys for Tots Train, the donated toys are laid out in the Whitehall Volunteer Firehouse and registered children are allowed in for pickup. To assure fairness, the parent or guardian of the registered children must report to the American Legion Post before the arrival of the train to draw a pick up number.
For those not in need of the donated toys, adults are welcome to bring in a toy for Santa to give their child.
