Robert C. Hewitt, 89

Robert C. Hewitt, 89, of Main Street, South Glens Falls, passed away at his home on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, following a short illness surrounded by his loving family. 

  Born on June 16, 1920, in Plattsburgh, he was the son of the late Robert and Johanna (Jackstadt) Hewitt.
  Robert was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II.  He retired in 1982 as a conductor for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad in Saratoga Springs.
 In his early years, he enjoyed camping, and attending sporting events for his kids and enjoyed afternoon rides with his wife.
  He is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Sophie Zakrzewski Hewitt, who died in 2001; one brother, Donald Hewitt; and one sister, Marena McLaughlin.

 

  He is survived by three daughters, Faith Bouchard of South Glens Falls, Hope Ballou of Gansevoort and Charity Hewitt of South Glens Falls; four sons, Robert Hewitt of Gilby, N.D., Donald Hewitt, Thomas Hewitt and John Hewitt, all of Queensbury; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jack Hewitt and Thomas Hewitt, both of Whitehall, and Drake Hewitt of Hudson Falls; two sisters, Hope Fleury of Hudson Falls and Daune Martell of Whitehall; and several nieces and nephews.
   A Mass of Christian burial was conducted on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church in Whitehall with the Rev. Francis Dunbar officiating. Interment followed at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Whitehall with full military honors.
