Amos John Yell, 79, of Perry Lane, Whitehall, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland, Vt.
Born on Jan. 9, 1928 in Whitehall, he was the son of the late John Yell and Bernadette Yell.
Amos spent his life working on the tugs, rising from deck band to mate and captain. He sailed the waters of the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River as well as the Atlantic coast from Maine to Georgia, and Lake Champlain and the New York Canal System. He retired in 1989 due to health problems.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his son, Ron Amos Yell of Whitehall and one sister, Mary Harrington of Rutland, Vt.
Besides his wife, Ann Elise, he is survived by his daughter, Carole Ann and her husband, Ed Haskins of Whitehall, granddaughter, Heather Morrison and her husband, William and their children, Charlotte Ann and William Benjamin of Fort Ann; grandson, Shaun Joseph Symons and his significant other, Savannah Ross of Whitehall and grandson, Joshua Ron Symons and April Thompson and children, Layla Jean Symons and Landon Bristol of Savannah, Georgia; two sisters, Iris Moore of Syracuse and Shirley Rioua of Clifton Park and two brothers, William Ingle of Ballston Lake and Albert yell of Malta.
Amos requested that there be no calling hours.
A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted on Monday, June 25, at 10 a.m. at Greenmount Cemetery in Whitehall.
